4to (10 x 7¾ in.; 254 x 196 mm). General title-page and New Testament title-page, printer’s ornaments, text in two columns, ornamental initials; browning and spotting throughout severe on a few leaves.  Contemporary blindruled calf over wooden boards, in a tan cloth drop-box; joints cracked, edges torn, rubbed, remains of clasps.

Catalogue Note

Third edition of the first bible printed in a European language in America. This edition became known as the “Gun-Wad” bible, as British troops invading Germantown destroyed most of the 3,000 copies printed by using the sheets to make gun cartridges and litter for their horses.
