Catalogue Note

Dickens pens a brief but warm letter to his friend, artist and author James Ballantine: "I hasten to reply to your kind and highly esteemed proposal, that I am more than proud and more than delighted to accept it. I feel that I have this qualification for such an honor, which I may act against your friendly enlargement of any other: no one can have heard your verses sung with a fine admiration, a heartier sympathy, or a deeper emotion than Your faithful friend, Charles Dickens."
