Catalogue Note
Ongoing construction of the University of Virginia. Jefferson engages Samuel Williams in London as his intermediary in relaying commissions to Thomas Appleton for articles needed for the construction of the University of Virginia. He notes he is indebted to Appleton for "the advantage of passing over remittances and letters" through his correspondent. Jefferson explains: "I have found the passages you have been so good as to give them so safe and expeditious, that I am induced to repeat the liberty by asking you transmission of the enclosed; a liberty indeed which must be from time to time renewed, as we shall have repeated remittances and communications to make him for a year or two to come . . . ." Jefferson asks Williams for his indulgence for the "present trouble" adding assurances of his thankfulness.
