Collage entitled, "A Peace Prize for President Nixon (and LBJ and Kennedy too)," incorporating a black eagle, red and white ribbon, a blue overlay and a dove made of felt on a poster board with hundreds of signatures (30 x 20 1/4 in.; 762 x 513mm), New York City, 20 October 1969, signed, dated with title on verso; framed and glazed.
Catalogue Note
This collage was presented on 15 November 1969 at the major national demonstration in Washington D.C. known as the "National Mobilization Against the Vietnam War." Artist Jacqueline Skiles invited activists, artists and politicians who were part of the anti-war movement to sign the piece. Signatures on the collage include Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Benjamin Spock (on verso), Dick Gregory, Dave Dellinger, Sidney Peck, Coretta Scott King, George McGovern, Yoko Ono, Mary Travis (of Peter, Paul and Mary), Tom Paxton, and many others. Skiles writes on the back of the collage: "A Peace Prize for President Nixon (and LBJ and Kennedy to) for his massive contribution to the annihilation of the Family of Man by Jacqueline Skiles, former Special Term Methodist Missionary to Brazil, Grad Student, New School of Research, Now Committee of Returned Volunteers and Washington Square Methodist Church and joined by friends and supporters who have signed here & in New York City and Washington Nov. 15, 1969 National Mobilization." At the bottom of the back of the collage is a PEACE NOW bumper sticker. The artist donated the collage to a benefit auction the day of the demonstration to raise money for the anti-war movement.
