Two sketchbooks containing 110 highly detailed drawings in pen and ink, pencil and  watercolor of churches, public buildings and architectural details, many titled, dated and signed with initials, each sketchbook signed by the artist on the inside front covers, (5 1/8 x 7 1/4 in.; 135 x 184 mm), London, Somerset, Bristol Devon, Paris, Rouen, Fontainebleau, Beaune, Dijon, Reims, Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg, Strasbourg, 1878-1880; quarter black roan with pebbled black and green cloth; spines very worn and defective.

James Atwood Slater was premium holder in design, silver medallist of the Royal Academy of Arts and awarded the Sharpe prize by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The two sketchbooks contain a wide array of  intricately detailed drawings in various media of buildings and architectural details found during his travels in Europe and in  and around his environs at home in London and Bristol.
