Catalogue Note
First edition in Italian, and the first edition of Gastaldi's maps including the first two copperplate maps devoted to North America.
The translation was prepared by Pietro Andrea Mattioli from Sebastian Münster's edition of 1540. The maps in this edition were designed by Gastaldi and those of the modern world are entirely new, including seven relating to the Americas and the first series of printed maps of the New World. Among these are the first separate printed map of the Mississippi and Florida region, and the first of the east coast of New England. It also includes the first separate map devoted to Arabia and the first reference to Singapore on a printed map.
