Catalogue Note

A whimsical and emblematic relic of Singin' in the Rain (1952), voted the greatest movie musical (and the fifth greatest American film overall) by the American Film Institute. Because his co-star Debbie Reynolds was not a trained dancer, Gene Kelly's character, Don Lockwood, was partnered with Cyd Charisse in the film's "Broadway Melody" ballet sequence. Charisse also co-starred with Kelly in Brigadoon (1954) and It's Always Fair Weather (1956).

While the exchange of gifts among cast members and crew at the wrap of a film is a long-established tradition, Kelly's daughter recalled that Kelly preferred to give sports-themed gifts rather than the more typical jewelry.
