Catalogue Note

The double-headed eagle is often used as dynastic emblem, and can be seen here with claws outstretched and lavishly set with precious stones. The tight filigreework and square-set gems are reminiscent of a similar piece sold in these rooms 16 October 1997, lot 54 (published in Hasson p.61, no.78). A further comparable piece is in the Benaki Museum, Athens (inv. no. 2010, see Amsterdam 1999, p.281, no.283). Dated to the seventeenth century, it is said to have once belonged in the collection of Prince Yasensky who was given the piece by Tsarina Alexandra, wife of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Such a provenance attests to the enduring and global appreciation for the quality and beauty of these Moroccan jewels.
