A Kütahya Calligraphic Pottery Hanging Ornament, Turkey, 19th Century

of large ovoid form, decorated in black under a turquoise glaze with calligraphic inscriptions, set at the top and bottom with two brass mounts, the top one with a long chain for hanging, the other with a golden tassle, both stamped with [possibly] tughra of Abdülmecid (r.1839-1861)

In general good condition, with few hairline cracks to glaze, some tarnishing on metal mounts, as viewed.

The inscriptions contain the bismillah, Qur'an, chapter XXI (al-Anbiya'), verse 107; 'God, exalted be His glory'; 'Muhammad, peace be upon him'; the names of the four Orthodox Caliphs, Hasan and Husayn each ending with 'May God be satisfied with him'
