Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper, 13 lines to the page, written in neat Naskh script in black ink, in 2 columns separated by double intercolumnar rules in gold, margins ruled in gold, in later leather binding with ebru doublures

Provenance

The manuscript bears the seal of the nineteenth-century calligrapher, bibliophile and calligraphy collector Hasan Tahsin Effendi (d.1916).

Condition

In good overall condition, occasional very minor smudges, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

Hocazade Mehmed Enveri Effendi (d.1695)

Born in Istanbul, Hocazade Mehmed Effendi studied calligraphy under the supervision of Suyolcuzade Mustafa Effendi. He was appointed calligraphy teacher in the Firuz Agha Mosque, the celebrated post of the late fifteenth-century master Sheikh Hamdullah (d.1526). He also worked as the chief muadhdhin of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. A member of the naqshbandi sufi order, Hocazade Mehmed Effendi was celebrated for his mastery in thuluth and naskh scipts.
