Catalogue Note
The exercised phrase is a hadith of Prophet Muhammad and reads 'Beware of the glance of the believer since he only looks through a divine light'. To the best of our knowledge, the present calligraphic exercise is the only known signed work by Kashiqchi-zade Ali Effendi as no other work has been found in any of the renowned stately and private collections of Islamic calligraphy.
Kashiqchi-zade, one of the favorite students of Dervish Ali the Great (d.1673), studied calligraphy together with Huseyin Cezairi and Mehmed Ali Misri. His style was followed by many masters including Isma'il Zuhdi Effendi the elder (d.1731).
