  • Gilt copper
of pyriform shape on a short wide foot, with a ringed neck, a serpentine handle and spout, chased and engraved with scrolls issuing leafy floral decoration

Condition

In general good condition, some rubbing to gilding and minor dents, lid, stopper, and associated chains missing, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The screw thread in the spout and mouth suggests that the vessel was intended as a portable vessel, quite possibly for use by pilgrims on the hajj to bring back the sacred waters of the zamzam well in the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. For a similar example, see Allan 1986, p.114-15, no.24).
