Catalogue Note
This pair of vases originates from Murshidabad, the nawabi capital of Bengal, a known centre for ivory carving. Their Western-derived shape and Indian design reflect the cultural synthesis that was popular amongst the British and Indian elite at that time. It is possible that these vases were made as a special commission for a high official or some other wealthy individual.
