Catalogue Note

This magnificent bidriware ewer stands out, not only for its large and imposing size, but also because of its original and complex decoration. The central band of decoration on the body of the ewer features repeating leafy bouquets with dangling branches and springing buds. These motifs are at once naturalistic yet controlled, and resemble textile and rug designs of the same period. A particular comparison can be drawn with Indian chintz fabrics of the early eighteenth century that are decorated with complex floral designs combining Indian, European and East Asian elements to create a wide variety of fantastical scenes. The leafy sprays on this ewer appear to have been arranged as bouquets composed of palmettes, leafy strands and shoots of blossoms. The effect of this design, gleaming in silver, renders this ewer at once glamorous and exotic.
