of shallow round form with a flaring rim on a short vertical foot, painted in a golden-brown lustre with an opaque tin glaze, decorated with a stellar arabesque to the centre surrounded by a cursive inscription, the rim with a Kufic inscription reserved in lustre with stylised scrolls in the background, the exterior with a band of lotus motifs

Condition

In fairly good condition, once broken and restored with associated overpainting a minor infill, some crack lines still visible, glaze bright, as viewed.

Around the rim in Kufic, reserved against lustre:

al-‘izz al-da’im wa … li-sahibihi al-sa’ada [wa] al-sur[ur?]

‘Perpetual glory and … to its owner happiness and joy … to its owner happiness and joy.'

Around the wall in lustre, a Persian quatrain and benedictions:

bar man setam-e faraq o tanha’i bin
vin mehnat-e bi-deli o sheyda’i bin
yek shab be-tamasha-yi man-e sukhteh del
ey jan-e jahan biya afat-e suda’i bin

‘Look at me and the distress of separation and loneliness
And look at this affliction of heartlessness and insanity
One night, observe me, consumed with pain
O the soul of the world! Come and see misfortune of [being] passionate.’

‘izz wa iqbal wa al-sa’adat wa al-karamat

‘Glory and prosperity and happiness and generosity.’
