Description

  • 217cm. high., 172.5cm. wide; 7ft. 1½in., 5ft. 8in.
with pierced acanthus cresting with a portrait in oil on canvas of Empress Maria-Thérèse, the divided plate carved with rocaille, scrolls, acanthus leaves and foliage

Condition

In need of some very minor attention but once restored will look most impressive. Some small breaks in the glass as visible from the photo. Gilding slightly dirty and would benefit from a light clean, Old minor marks, chips and scratches as visible from the photo. Crack in cornice of right side will need filling. Section of tip foliate motif based right side missing. Construction cracks at joints which can easily be filled. Old minor restorations to carving. Two holes formerley with screws in acanthus cresting. Minor section of glass missing to left side, now with some infill.

Catalogue Note

According to tradition the painting was given  by Carlo Emanuele III of Savoy (King of Sardinia from 1730-1773) to Maria Theresa Queen of Hungary (171-1780) mother of Emperor Giuseppe II.
