This pair of candlesticks for their quality and decoration is close to the celebrated altar set which was a gift from Pope Clemente XVIII (Rezzonico, 1758-1769) to the Beato Gregorio Barbarigo Chapel, in St. Marks, Rome. That set was made by the renowned goldsmith Carlo Guarneri (Tesori d'Arte Sacra, exhibition catalogue, Rome, 1975, cat. 349). A smaller pair (26cm) of this set, was sold by Il Ponte, lot 387, 18th  March 2008.
