Catalogue Note

The distinctive French style of the present lot with its elaborate and finely cast gilt-bronze mounts and hand painted porcelain plaques is characteristic of the work of Town & Emanuel, leading London cabinet-makers in 1830s. Working from premises in New Bond Street, Town & Emanuel attracted commissions from such distinguished patrons Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV, and the Duke of Sutherland, specialising in fine quality French style furniture. The table can be compared with a similar French style writing desk, labelled Town & Emanuel,  illustrated in Christopher Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1976, pl. 903.
