Description

8¾-inch twelve-piece enamel cartouche dial signed Helme A Paris, the early 18th Century movement similarly signed with numbered outside count wheel and altered anchor escapement, quarter repeating work removed, the case veneered with red shell, the domed cresting surmounted by a cockerel and further decorated with flower garlands and masks, the lower section with glazed concave sides, a plumed mask at the front, on winged term feet, resting on a similarly decorated plinth and raised on a tapered pedestal with foliate boulle inlay to the front and with similar mounts

Provenance

This clock was a wedding gift from The Right Honourable The Earl of Rosebery, First Lord of the Treasury, to H J Tennant, Secretary of State to the Board of Trade on his marriage to May Abraham in 1896.

Condition

PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS SHOULD INSPECT PERSONALY. Dial with chip to I and cracks to VII and VIII. Movement is reasonably clean and appears to run, escapement altered, lacking repeating work, evidence of alteration to signature. Case is very dirty with several detached pieces of brass, some damage to the inlay on the cresting, other damage, loose sections and minor losses throughout, case mounts with original uncleaned patination. Pedestal as the case. With pendulum, winder and case key.
