Catalogue Note
This table is of very good quality and recalls colonial furniture from the South of India. The deeply incised carving and the pylon supports relate to a richly carved circular centre table which was sold, these rooms, Important English Furniture, 30 November 2001, lot 111. It was suggested that this table sold in 2001 was made in Madras. It featured Scottish detailing, which included a profusion of carved thistles. There were known to be Scottish cabinet makers working on the East Coast, particularly in Calcutta in the 19th century.. Interestingly, the offered lot, has a number of details which also relate to the Scottish cabinet maker William Trotter. There are heavily gadrooned borders, a frieze with linear channelled decoration and central 'pylon' type supports all devices used by Trotter in his work, see Francis Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, pl. 54B- 69, suggesting a possible link between the present table and these Scottish cabinet makers.
