Description

  • width 8.7cm, 3 3/8 in
rectangular with cut corners, the lid applied with a micromosaic panel of an idyllic Arcadian landscape, silver frame and mounts, maker's mark, Rome town mark, in original tooled leather case

Condition

The micromosaic panel is of very fine quality and is in excellent condition. The box base has been broken and tactfully repaired. The outer case is suffering from time wear both inside and out.

Catalogue Note

Luigi Mascelli (circa 1770-1825), son of Giuseppe Mascelli and Marianna Betti, became master goldsmith in Rome in 1804, living and working until his death at 90 and 91 Piazza di Spagna in Rome. He was the father of Giovanni Andrea and Giovacchino Mascelli, both of whom also specialised in mounting mosaic snuff boxes.
