Catalogue Note
The arms are those of Hodgson impaling Howard quartering Brotherton, Warren and Mowbray for Colonel (later Field Marshal) Studholme Hodgson (1708-1798), who began his military career in 1728. He served under the Duke of Cumberland at the Battles of Fontenoy (1745) and Culloden (1746) but is best remembered for his part as a Lieutenant General in 1761 in the campaign to capture the Belle Île off the coast of Brittany. He married Catherine, daughter of Lieutenant General the Hon. Thomas Howard and his wife (née Morton). Hodgson’s portrait was painted by George Romney.
