Catalogue Note

These two figures are from a series of Commedia dell'Arte figures modelled in 1768. They were smaller versions of  a set modelled by Wezel Neu, circa 1764-65, based on engravings by Johann Ballthazar probst after drawings by Johan Jacob Schübler, published in 1729. Most of the smaller series were modelled by Göring, Harlequin being the only figure copied by  Pfränger senior. For a discussion of the series see Ralf-Jürgen Sattler, "Theater Figuren' von Closter Veilsdorf ', in R.Jansen (ed), Commedia dell'Arte, Fest der Komödianten, 2001, pp.86ff.
