Catalogue Note

The inclusion of Tibetan hierarchical lineage in the upper registers and a Tibetan donor in the lower left suggests that this fine and early Nepalese painting was commissioned in the Kathmandu Valley and painted in the classical Newar style for use in a Tibetan context either within Nepal or in Tibet: for another Nepalese painting commission for use in a Tibetan context see Pratapaditya Pal, The Arts of Nepal, Volume Two: Painting, Leiden/Köln, 1978, pl. 78, and compare the format of compartmented registers with a Newar painting dated 1552 in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, ibid, pl. 105
