Catalogue Note
Parmi la remarquable diversité de sièges - à motifs humains ou animaliers - enrichissant les arts du Burkina Faso, seuls deux exemplaires connus, tous deux Bobo et conservés dans la collection de Thomas G.B. Wheelock, se présentent sous la forme d'un personnage cariatide. Selon Christopher Roy (in Roy et Wheelock, 2007, p. 455), « ce superbe tabouret représentant un personnage féminin soigneusement sculpté, et arborant sur le visage, la poitrine et l'abdomen, les scarifications élaborées caractéristiques des Bobo, pourrait avoir servi comme un siège honorifique à l'homme chargé d'organiser les initiations des jeunes hommes ». A la singularité du type s'ajoute la grande rareté de la statuaire Bobo, dont ce siège très ancien témoigne de la remarquable force sculpturale, associée à la beauté des motifs tégumentaires par lesquels les femmes Bobo affirmaient leur statut et leur identité.
