Catalogue Note
Les cannes bober revêtaient un usage à la fois utilitaire et rituel. «Réservé à des hommes très âgés, arrivés au statut d'arrière grand-père du futur initié, le bober était reçu de son petit-fils comme promesse [...] que ce dernier s'acquitterait bien des obligations dues pour que soit conféré à son ancêtre défunt le statut prestigieux d'ancêtre. [...] Sa réalisation nécessitait le talent des sculpteurs les plus renommés et les plus statutairement proches de son usager » (Bognolo, 2007, p. 27). Celle-ci, attribuée par Piet Meyer à Sikiré Kambiré (1896-1963) ou à son atelier (Meyer, 1981, p. 140, n° 188), se distingue par le très beau mouvement des corps épousant la courbe tendue de la poignée, et par la dignité de la pose et des visages opposés. Voir Leiris et Delange (1967, p. 280) pour une canne très comparable.
