Condition

The colours are even more vivid and fresh than they appear in the catalogue illustration, notably the yellow and blue pigments. This work is in very good condition. The canvas is not lined. A close inspection reveals some stable hairline shrinkage in the blue pigment of the spherical form and a very small zone of hairline craquelure where the yellow background meets the green pigment towards the right edge (as visible in the catalogue illustration). There is a small retouched indent towards the centre of the right edge and a pin-head sized spot of paint-loss on the edge of the lower left corner. Examination under UV light reveals two 1cm lines of retouching along the right part of the upper edge and a 0,5cm line of retouching in the lower half of the blue sphere. There are two small spots of retouching in the lower right quadrant and three small spots of retouching in the lower left quadrant.

Catalogue Note

signed 'Max Ernst' and dated '61' (lower right) ; signed 'Max Ernst', dated '1961' and titled 'La Terre à travers les âges' on the reverse, oil on canvas. Painted in 1961.

" La terre est bleue comme une orange
Jamais une erreur les mots ne mentent pas
Ils ne vous donnent plus à chanter
Au tour des baisers de s'entendre
Les fous et les amours
Elle sa bouche d'alliance
Tous les secrets tous les sourires
Et quels vêtements d'indulgence
À la croire toute nue.

Les guêpes fleurissent vert
L'aube se passe autour du cou
Un collier de fenêtres
Des ailes couvrent les feuilles
Tu as toutes les joies solaires
Tout le soleil sur la terre
Sur les chemins de ta beauté".

Paul Éluard, La Terre est bleue..., 1929
