Catalogue Note
La statuaire cultuelle Luba "reste étrangement peu abondante en comparaison avec celle d'autres catégories d'objets" (Neyt, 1993, p. 158). Dès 1913, Colle désignait par le terme mikishi (sing. nkisi) les statuettes ou amulettes anthropomorphes employées par les spécialistes rituels Luba pour la divination, la guérison, l'initiation et le règlement de litiges. Celles contenant, comme ici, des ingrédients magiques étaient appelées mikishi mihake. Voir Nooter-Roberts et Roberts (1996, p. 91) pour la célèbre statue Luba de la collection Malcoms, présentant ces mêmes rares attributs et une patine également huileuse.
