Catalogue Note
Cette rare coupe anthropomorphe témoigne de l'étroite relation entre les Pende du Bandundu et les groupes voisins du Kasai occidental. Selon Leon de Sousberghe (1959, p. 14-15), les coupes céphalomorphes et parfois anthropomorphes, dont les traits évoquent le visage des pendentifs ikhoko, n'étaient pas réalisées par les Pende mais par les Lele et Wongo voisins. Ici, la dynamique de la pose et le talent avec lequel le sculpteur est parvenu à transcender la fonctionnalité de l'objet évoquent directement l'art des Wongo. Voir Torday et Joyce (1910, p. 200) pour une coupe anthropomorphe Wongo à personnage masculin, collectée par Torday entre 1907 et 1909.
