Catalogue Note
La forme de ce très rare appui-tête/plat à viande évoque un bovidé stylisé. Selon Manuel Valentin (in Joubert & Valentin, 2002, p. 262, n° 83) "le bétail constitue la clé de voûte de l'organisation sociale des zoulous. Il appartient aux ancêtres et, comme tel, il matérialise leur présence permanente au sein de la communauté familiale."
Hormis sa fonction utilitaire - protéger la coiffure élaborée du dormeur - l'appui-tête constitue un véhicule métaphysique, une "machine à rêves" intimement liée aux ancêtres (cf. Nettleton, 1990).
