Les bidjogo appellent iran les objets servant de support matériel aux divinités. Associée à la fertilité et à l’abondance des récoltes, cette figure d’autel iran otigango (« esprit civilisé ») était la propriété soit d’un village, soit d’une dignitaire Bidjogo.
De manière conventionnelle, les jambes disparaissent pour mettre en valeur le siège sur lequel elle repose, tandis que les bras se fondent dans l’épaisseur du buste. A la radicalité de la conception répond ici la superbe rigueur des formes stylisées, jouant sur la juxtaposition des plans et l’accentuation des points de rupture. La patine profonde et les restes d’offrandes rituelles attestent sa grande ancienneté. Le Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde de Dresde possède un iran de style comparable (inv. n° 59065), collecté par Bernard Struck vers 1930.
