Catalogue Note
Les Ondonga forment l'une des huit grandes tribus Ovambo, peuple Bantou habitant le nord de la Namibie (Ovamboland) et le sud de l'Angola. Si très peu d'œuvres leur sont attribuées, ils sont connus pour la beauté de leurs - très rares - couteaux, dont le fourreau s’épanouit en un demi-cercle superbement rythmé par une ligature en fils de laiton.
Voir Dapper (1987, p. 34, n° 25) pour un couteau Ovambo / Ondonga très comparable dans les collections du musée Dapper (Paris), décrit comme "remis aux sentinelles en signe de reconnaissance" (p. 58) ; et Beckmann (2012 p. 97, n° 146,147) pour deux autres, collectés par le botaniste zurichois Hans Schinz entre 1884 et 1887, dont l'ouvrage mentionne qu'ils étaient réservés aux membres des familles royales.
