Catalogue Note
Apparaissant lors des funérailles afin d'illustrer un au-delà chaotique s'opposant au monde ordonné des vivants (Blakely, 1987, p. 32), les masques Hemba de la société du so'o, mi-humain, mi-simiesque, sont rares, et celui-ci est l'un des plus remarquables. Il se distingue à la fois par l'identification précise du chimpanzé (bouche proéminente à la lèvre supérieure plate et aux commissures relevées) et par le raffinement de la sculpture - tension des courbes accentuée par les traits resserrés, finesse des modelés, nuances brillantes et grumeleuses de la patine sombre.
