Condition
The colours are fairly accurate in the catalogue illustration although they are less vivid in the original. The illustration does not convey the collage's relief.
The work is executed on paper laid down on canvas, unstretched and cut to the dimensions of the sheet of paper. Under very close inspection, are visible:
- few paint losses along the four edges
- a paint loss (approx. 0.3 x 0.3 cm) located in the upper left quadrant
- a paint loss (approx. 0.2 x 0.2 cm) located in the upper right quadrant
The work is in excellent condition.

Catalogue Note
Commencées en mars 1979, les oeuvres du cycle des Brefs exercices d'école journalière auquel appartient L'Outrage sont "dans la foulée des Théâtres de mémoire. Elles sont, comme ces derniers, plurifocales, conjugant dans un même tableau des sites multiples, supposés procéder de regards divergents qui s'associent dans un instant de la pensée. Mais, de façon générale [...], ce sont des sites plus équivoques, plus indéterminés, plus généraux, ou, si on veut employer un terme affectionné des milieux culturels, plus abstraits. Disons d'un degré plus avancé dans la désinvolture avec laquelle sont représentés les lieux et les objets évoqués, en telle manière que leur identification devient très incertaine, aléatoire. Les personnages qui y apparaissent (eux aussi très anonymes) aident - c'est là surtout leur fonction - à prêter force d'évoquation aux sites où ils évoluent. Les critères qui régissent usuellement toute peinture - unité et équilibre de la composition, des scriptions et des coloris - sont, dans tous ces petits tableaux, particulièrement malmenés."
