probably Isis, her oval face with large almond-shaped eyes, incised irises, and eyebrows in relief, the ribbed centrally-parted coiffure with long spiral curls falling over the temples, one globular earring remaining, a rectangular mortise and remains of lead tenons above the forehead for attachment of a crown and diadem.

Condition

Good and as shown; note damage to nose and mouth. Fragmentary areas on lower back and sides of the head. The proper left eye is more extensively chipped than the right.

Catalogue Note

Harris Dunscombe Colt studied at Oxford University. Early in his career he worked in Egypt under W.M. Flinders Petrie, and from 1933 to 1938 directed his own excavations at Auja er-Hafir in the Negev. A man of wide-ranging interests, he formed a notable collection of Kipling first editions.
