Description

  • A Roman Marble Janiform Herm Head of a Satyr and Maenad

  • Height 4 in. 10.2 cm.
one side carved with a head of a maenad with bow-shaped lips and almond-shaped eyes, her centrally parted wavy hair tied in a fillet, bound in a wreath of ivy leaves and berries, and surmounted by a stephane, the other side carved with the head of a satyr with parted lips, snub nose, and gnarled brow, his hair swept up above the forehead, arranged in rows of spiral locks on top, and crowned with ivy leaves and berries in back, both heads slightly turned.

Austrian family collection, Vienna, since the early part of the 20th Century

Ivy leaves better preserved on one side than the other, note various chips and abrasions.
