  • A Roman Marble Cinerary Urn inscribed to Julia Sabbathis

  • 6 1/4 by 14 by 11 in. 15.9 by 35.6 by 27.9 cm.
of semi-circular form, the front corners each finely carved in shallow relief with a head of Zeus-Ammon above twin cornucopiae, a dolphin with upward-pointing tail on each of the short sides, the rectangular framed panel inscribed with two lines of Latin inscription, Iuliae S[ervae] Sabbathidis, "of Julia Sabbathis, slave."

with a gallery in Rome, Via Frattina, no. 118, prior to 1895
American private collection, Southampton, New York, probably acquired more than 50 years ago

Condition

As shown, note chips to upper edge above head of Zeus Ammon on the left , to upper left corner of framed panel, larger chip to bottom of lower left corner and smaller ones along lower edge and right corner, there is a deep but inconspicuous loss on the lower edge of curved end around right side, chip on side of upper edge on interior in back, surface well preserved, some areas encrusted, in particular upper half of left side panel.
