Catalogue Note

Tophane pottery, named after the area of Istanbul in which it was manufactured became prominent in the late nineteenth century for wares produced with this red body but also in black and paler brown. The decoration is either carved, moulded, stamped and frequently embellished with gilt. This form of pottery provided, for the most part, small scale objects for personal use gaining particular note for utensils involved with smoking, notably the luleciligi, or pipe bowls.
