Catalogue Note
In 1776 Hilaire joined the comte de Choiseul-Gouffier (who would in 1784 become French ambassador in Constantinople) on a tour of Greece, the Bosphorus, and Asia Minor. Between the ruins of a theatre to the left and the Büyük Menderes river in the distance, Hilaire placed a group of Turks in the lower centre, and depicted himself drawing in the middle distance. Jean-Baptiste Tilliard later made an engraving after this work, which appears in Voyages pittoresque de la Grèce.
