Catalogue Note
This and the following lot are drawings based on prints in the so-called Recueil Ferriol (Recueil de cent estampes representant differentes nations du Levant tirées sur les Tableaux peints d'après Nature en 1707 et 1708 par les ordres de M. de Ferriol) published in Paris in 1714. The publication was commissioned by Charles de Ferriol (1652-1722), French ambassador in Constantinople from 1699-1710, and included engravings by different printmakers after a hundred works by Jean-Baptiste Vanmour in Ferriol's collection depicting types of the Ottoman Empire wearing their distinctive costumes. Although the original paintings by Vanmour do not appear to have survived, the great success of the publication meant the compositions were known to a wide audience.
The drawings in this lot are copies after plate 63, Un Juif, and plate 95, Habillement des principaux Barbaresques, both engraved by Bernard Baron (c. 1700-1762).
