Catalogue Note

The placement of the lady with her child is very similar to that in a portrait of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu standing with her young son Edward (see note to following lot) attributed to Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. In First day of School (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), Vanmour also made use of a similar motif.
