Condition

The canvas has been relined. Uv light reveals strokes of retouching throughout, notably in his green drapery and in the upper left, upper right and above him in the background. The painting is less red than in the catalogue illustration. Held in a decorative gold-painted frame.

Catalogue Note

This is the Beulouk-bachi, head of the Sultan's kitchen. The same figure, with cooking pans behind him on a stove, appears in a print after Vanmour in the Recueil Ferriol (see note to lots 246 and 247).
