Catalogue Note

This book case, with its beautifully embellished velvet cover, would have been created to protect a highly-prized manuscript. The quality and richness of decoration recall the embroidered decoration of cases made for manuscripts in the imperial library at this time, such as one made for a divan of Selim III, now in the Istanbul University Library (Atasoy 1992, p.132). This case can be compared to a Qur'an purse also embroidered with gilded silver threads (Topkapi Sarayi Museum No. 31/197).
