Oil on copper. Under UV light there are some scattered retouchings which fluoresce, notably in the sky near the upper edge, in the lower part of her left cheek, and minor spots in her dress. The sky and sea have been repainted circa mid-20th Century, though it is unclear why, as the original paint appears to still be present underneath). There is a 3cm scratch through her right sleeve.
Overall this work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Georges de La Chappelle accompanied French ambassadors to the court of the Sultan of Constantinople and painted the portraits of ladies in the royal entourage, which were engraved by Noël Cochin and published in Paris in 1648 under the title Recueil de divers Portraits des principales Dames de la Porte du grand Turc, tirés au naturel sur les lieux, et dédiés à madame la comtesse de Fiesque par Georges de La Chappelle, Peintre de la ville de Caen. One of the prints by Cochin after La Chappelle depicts a near identical composition (numbered 2 in the upper left), with two figures on horseback in the lower left. The present work is of the same period.
