Condition

The colour photograph in the catalogue is not a true representation of the piece. In reality the colours are crisp and defined and more attractive. The white spots in the lower right corner of the catalogue photograph are from the reflection of the glass during photography. They are not present on the actual panel. The faded colouration across the central panel, again is not on the panel in reality. The panel is a cerise pink with delicate yellow and pretty blue (more like the top section of the photograph). The panel is a complete loom width, with original selvedges to both edges. There are some minor abrasions. Overall in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

For discussion and example of textiles woven with the classical undulating vertical stem pattern, and a particularly luxurious example of a caftan dated to the last quarter 16th century, woven with an exuberant and stylised pattern of swaying stems with tulips alternating direction and interspersed with two delicate leaves, with crimson flowers on gold and silver ground, see Gürsu, Nevber, The Art of Turkish Weaving, Designs through the Ages, Istanbul, 1988, pg.96, no.94, from The Topkapi Saray Museum (12/216).
