Catalogue Note
It is interesting to note that this table bears an old paper label bearing what appears to be the name A S Hatch, possibly for Alfrederic Smith Hatch (1829–1904) who may have inherited or acquired pieces from the collection of Eward Maynard, who purchased Ericstan House in 1865. The house had been designed by A. J. Davis and the house was built from 1855-1859. Hatch was a prominent Wall Street broker in the firm of Fisk and Hatch and president of the New York Stock Exchange from 1883 to 1884. Like many of his business associates, he was an enthusiastic collector of art. A related table was sold at Sotheby's New York, The Collection of Federick W. Hughes, October 10, 2001, Sale 7719, lot 298
The table's outstanding legs were likely imported English or French castings, based on the legs of Assyrian bulls or lamassu a deity with a bull's body, wings, and human head, as seen on the gates of the palace of King Sargon at Khorsbad, Iran.
