Condition

Loss to veneer/inlay at bottom of back at jusction of stiles. Proper left stile wtih 1 1/2 inch triangular patch at top of stile. Inlay at base of shield back lost.

Catalogue Note

This remarkable chair is one of the set of chairs Samuel Chase (1741-1811) had commission for his home located at the corner of Lexington and Eutaw streets in Baltimore, Maryland.  Chase is one of four Maryland signors of the United States Declaration of Independence.  Another chair from the same set is in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society (see Gregory R. Weidman, Furniture in Maryland, 1740-1940: The Collection of the Maryland Historical Society, (Baltimore: The Society, 1984), pp. 105-6, no. 49.)
