Catalogue Note

This exceptional early chest is wonderfully preserved and retains its original untouched red pigment.  A very closely related chest was part of the furnishings of the Sheldon House in Deerfield, Massachusetts once owned by Susan B. Hawks (1883-1946). This chest and others are discussed in Dean A. Fales, Jr, The Furniture of Historic Deerfield, (New York: Dutton: 1976), p. 177, no. 372.
