Catalogue Note

Silversmith Elias Davis was likely born in Newburyport, MA around 1746, and died there in September 1783 at the age of thirty-seven.  Upon his death he is believed to have left a wife Phoebe (or Phebe) Woodman, who he married in December 1769, a fifteen-year-old son and a thirteen-year-old daughter.  His son, also named Elias (1782-1856) eventually followed in his father's footsteps and became a silversmith working in Newburyport, Boston and Gardiner, ME.  Approximately twenty-five known pieces have been attributed to Elias Davis, Sr., including six canns, three creamers, one porringer, three salts, one strainer and eleven spoons.
