Catalogue Note
Born in 1806, Moses Taylor became one of the wealthiest men of the nineteenth century through investments in banking, railroads, transatlantic telegraph infrastructure and his own import business. His father Jacob Taylor served as an agent for John Jacob Astor and assisted with Astor’s real estate purchases in New York City. With an early advantage in life, Moses eventually became the director of the City Bank of New York, a precursor to Citibank, and a controlling owner of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad.
